So far, so good. My back is continuing to improve and I've been eating better so far this week. In the past, I was weighing myself every morning but I have changed that up. I weighed myself Monday and then I did again today. It appears I am down three pounds. I know that some of that is due to hormones which seem to affect my weight quite a bit. That's something that has changed as I got older. When I was younger, it didn't seem like I was bloating or retaining water. Now, however, that seems to be something that happens more and more.
I've been using the elliptical. Monday I just did a straight workout but today I tried to do some intervals. I increased the intensity for one minute and had a one minute rest where I decreased my intensity. I noticed that at the end of the workout that, while I went a little further in the same amount of time, the calories that I burned were fewer than when I did a straight workout.
I work in retail and Thursday is my delivery day. Think 40lb bags of pet food and litter. Lots of them. There is the lifting of them and then the walking to put them away. I wear an activity monitor and I ended up taking 13,291 steps (roughly 10.65 kms). That ends up equaling a pretty good workout in my books.
Today, although I did plank pose, I also did some sit ups and some hip raises. I am working on increasing my back strength and toning my ass. I think that part of my back pain comes from having weak muscles and I want to change that if at all possible. Although I want to lose weight, my end goal is to get healthier and in better shape. That includes building strength in my back.
Here's hoping that things continue to go well. I know that over time there is going to be setbacks and this isn't the last time I will have to deal with a bad back. I just hope that when things start acting up again that they won't be as bad or that I will be able to get through it without losing everything I've worked for up until that point.

A Back Injury and Getting Seriously Sidelined
Apparently I haven't been back to my blog since September. This is one of those cases of not realizing how fast time has passed. My plan is to blog a bit more regularly rather than space my posts out two and a half months apart.
In the time between postings, I managed to lose some weight which made me quite happy. I was working out two to three days a week. I was doing mostly elliptical workouts although I was also doing yoga every few days as well.
Then I fell off track. It didn't happen all at once, mind you. It happened bit by bit. I had a couple of Tim Horton's treats and some tea with extra cream in it. I work in a retail store that was located near a food court and a couple of times I visited A&W for meals. That stuff is tasty but it's hard to lose weight even when you're exercising.
Then, even that ended. I ended up feeling like I pulled one of the muscles in my ass and it hurt a lot. So, I stopped using the elliptical and about two weeks later the muscles in my back decided that they really, really hated me. I was pretty much confined to the couch for a couple of days and wasn't able to do much other than work, take medication and sleep.
It also made me hungry. Very, very hungry and so I ended up snacking quite a bit. That ended up leaving me weighing about 4 pounds heavier than I was when I started this blog. So, that means I just have to get back to it. I still have to take it easy so that I can build my back up again and avoid hurting it again. I'm also recommitting to the idea of eating in a healthier way and cutting back on my calorie intake.
Today, I was on the elliptical for about twenty minutes. I was careful not to use a program I had been that was very strenuous but I did crank up the resistance a bit. I also did some planks. Here was my workout:

New Elliptical
Recently, we got an elliptical machine so that I can work out even when going to the gym isn't an option. Man this thing is fancy! It's made by Nordiktrack and it really gets me working up a sweat. It has both an adjustable incline and adjustable resistance levels which really seem to help me work out. I do get a little discouraged because it doesn't seem like I am burning many calories but it is keeping me moving which is the most important thing.
Today, I did a 20 minute workout that burned 126 calories. After, I came down and did some crunches and some flutter kicks. I also did some weights using dumb bells that we have kicking around the house. I was at the gym a couple of days ago and worked my upper body so things are still recovering a little but I feel like I got a good workout in.
I've kind of plateaued which is frustrating but I am hoping that now that I am using the elliptical almost every day and doing weights and crunches that things will change. I had also let my diet get bad again. A few fast food meals here and there and some poor choices have kept me right around the 180 pound mark which seems to be the weight that my body wants to sit at. I want to be at least 15-20 pounds lighter so something is going to have to give.
On a positive note, my clothes are fitting better which is giving me massive amounts of peace of mind even though the scale is not being reassuring. It means that there are positive changes going on somewhere even if it isn't reflected on the scale. I am currently wearing a lovely pair of running shorts that I haven't felt comfortable wearing because they were just a little TOO tight. Now, they fit just right.
I know that I am just going to need to refine my diet and recommit to what I want to achieve. I also know that it's going to be a gradual thing and that I shouldn't get upset if things don't get where I want them to be overnight. If I lose it slowly I will have done it in a more healthy way that will allow my body to adjust. It will see being lighter as a new normal rather than going into survival mode the way it would if I dieted too drastically or pushed myself too hard with exercise.

Getting Back on Track
Getting back on track has been harder than I anticipated. I keep intending to start eating "clean" again. For me, that means fewer fast food meals, less nutritionally empty snacks, cutting back on the amount of alcohol that I am drinking and generally trying to eat fewer calories. I've done it before and I should be able to do so again but it is really, really hard.
There have been a few celebratory meals that have been eaten. That has often meant eating at a restaurant and has involved alcohol being consumed. Also, even when I was eating at a friend's place instead of at a restaurant, the meal was not exactly light on calories or fat. So, as a result, my weight has continued to plateau. It's not going up much higher than it was, but it sure isn't getting any lower, either.
I've also been fighting a cold for a couple of days and this has ended up with me wanting to eat all the things. Comfort food is wonderful but it isn't light on fat or calories, that's for sure. It's also made it difficult for me to be able to work out as well. I'm still committed to exercising on my new elliptical, this has just been a temporary setback.
I'm trying really hard not to get discouraged or upset or even give up. I know that the changes I am trying to make are really long term and so small hiccups shouldn't really make me feel like a failure but it does sometimes. I guess I just need to push through and find a new motivational source instead.

Plateauing
Lately, I feel like I have been a bit stuck with everything. I've been stuck right around the 180 pound mark. Sometimes I am a bit lower but it seems like I do the least little thing "wrong" and end up popping right back up again. I eat out? Bam. 180. I don't walk a bajillion kilometers a day? Bam. 180. It's like this weight is my nemesis.
Now, to be honest, I know that I can do better. I know that I can eat better than I have been. I've been taking in quite a few calories and then relying on exercise to get below the magic number that my fitness app says equals weight loss and I haven't been eating food that is nutritiously dense. I've been slipping back into my old ways and acting as though going for a long walk is going to get me where I want to be fitness-wise.
Recently, we had an elliptical machine delivered to the house. By recently, I mean yesterday. I went on it for about 20 minutes yesterday and planned to go on it today but have not yet done so. I did get some sit-ups in this morning and did front and side plank positions. I really want to try hard to tone up my abdominal region and this should help.
I want to tone and strengthen my core for a couple of reasons. The first is that I want to look better in a bikini next summer. The next is that I have a bad back and it has been bad for years. My hope is that if I tone and strengthen my core, that will disappear. Its a good plan but, like everything else, I've been kind of slacking. So my plan is to do crunches, front planks and side planks as often as possible, preferably every day.
So. I'm recommitting to my plan to eat better and committing to doing some core exercises in order to tone up and strengthen. I'll let you know how it all works out.

First Trip Back to The Gym
Today I headed back to the gym for the first day in a long, long time. Today was actually a fairly active day for me from start to finish and included a few really awesome firsts.
I stared the day doing yoga with my eldest daughter. I asked what she wanted to work on and she said her core, so we did a bunch of stuff to work on that would help her strengthen her core. We did a lot of plank position, bow pose, boat pose and a few other ones as well. It wasn't quite as relaxing as doing it alone but I do like working out with people rather than doing it by myself.
After doing yoga, I decided that I wanted to try doing a handstand. I found some great tips for doing a handstand and working up to being able to balance independently and decided to go for it. All my life, I have had arms that were too weak to support my body. I have tried to go upside down either on my hands or my head and have always crumpled and fallen over. Today, though, today I went for it:
I know I'm not very close to vertical and I am really relying on the wall a lot. But its a start. I was able to repeat it a few times and hold it for a half decent amount of time. I also was able to do a shoulder stand as well but I think I liked the handstand better. I'm planning on getting closer and closer to the wall and working on arm and core strength to make it easy to balance on my own.
Later, my husband and I decided to go to the gym. We started off by doing some cardio. I used the elliptical machine since I find it easiest on my joints. After that, we did some weights. I did leg work so I am wondering how I will be feeling in the morning.
Tonight, we took the dogs for a walk. We ended up going about 5.55 km and the weather was amazing. Its starting to get cooler now and the dogs really love that. Hopefully the weather stays like this for a while. Its a nice break from the super hot weather we have been having.

Another week or two on
It's been a little while since I have been posting but life got busy for a little while. My husband and I had his son come for a visit, work has been very hectic and things in general have suddenly seemed to go into overdrive. I've still been trying to eat well and keep my alcohol consumption as low as possible and am really feeling good because of it.
My weight has fluctuated quite a bit. I've been finding it hard to get below (and stay below) 180 lbs. A couple of meals at my favorite restaurant have mostly been to blame for that. I love crepes and there is an amazing restaurant in town that serves up some delicious ones. My favorite is filled with asparagus and is topped with crumbled bacon, scallops and black tiger shrimp along with copious amounts of cheese. Its amazing but it really packs on the pounds for me.
I've been trying hard to make sure I walk my dogs every night. They love it and I also enjoy being active as well. We normally walk at least 2.5-3km every day which really has helped me slim down. I may not be massively smaller but I feel better and that's also an important reason why I am doing this whole getting in shape thing.
Currently, I am sitting at around 179 lbs. I was down as low as 178 about a week and a half ago. Here's hoping I get back to that and resume my downward slide.
What do you do if you find that your weight loss has plateaued?

My Week so far
This week was a fairly active one for me. I was able to get out and walk with the dogs most evenings. When we walk, we normally go about 6kms which is fairly decent and it tires them out nicely. I didn't get around to doing yoga as much as I would have liked but I can always work on that next week. There were a couple of times where I tried to get a bit of practice in but events conspired against me.
I was on vacation from work for the past 5 days and the time seemed to fly by. We had a family reunion one day and a visit from my parents another day. The other days were mainly filled with running around to different appointments and so it didn't feel very vacation-y but it was nice to be able to (mostly) get up when I wanted instead of worrying about a work schedule.
My goal is to try to add in a different activity each week, even if I only do it once that week. It's important to switch up what you're doing in order to make sure that you don't get into a rut. This week, that new activity was tennis. My husband and I both bought racquets last year and ended up not using them much. This week, we ended up going out and hitting a ball around a court for about half an hour. It was casual and there was likely not much accuracy with our scoring but it was fun and we did work up a sweat.
I also had a few days where I was less careful about what I ate. I was pleased with how the family reunion went as far as eating is concerned. I didn't pig out and while I was over on my calories a bit it wasn't horrible and my weight mainly stayed on track. Now I'm being careful again and trying to make good choices as far as what I am eating so that I keep feeling good and so that my weight loss continues.
I've lost about 10 pounds so far. Not since the blog started though. I've lost the 10 pounds in about a month and a half which is really, really good and I am happy with the rate at which I am losing. I don't feel overly deprived of food and am still able to enjoy treats now and again.
Here are my stats as of this morning:
Weight: 178.0 lbs
BMI: 24.8
Chest: 40"
Waist: 34.25"
Hips: 40.25"

First Run in a Long, Long Time
Last night was my first real run in a long, long time so to be honest it was much more walking than it was running. My husband and I started out trying to run with our big dog but quickly gave up on that. He is super leash reactive and tends to go insane when he sees dogs, or people or anything he doesn't recognize as being on his "safe" list (and it's a very short list).
We quickly returned him to our house after he threw a total tantrum at the sight of another dog and continued on our way. We ended up run-walking (walk-running?) for about 3.39 miles. My tracker is stubbornly recording distances a la Americaine (ie not in Metric) and so its always a bit of unwelcome math when it comes to trying to convert miles to kilometers, something this Canadian potato is much more comfortable with.
This morning was interesting when it came to stiffness levels. Interesting because I was less stiff than I expected to be but not as loose and comfortable as I had hoped to be. As the day has progressed I have begun to stiffen up making work interesting to say the least. I am planning on going for a nice, easy walk tonight in hopes that it keeps my legs nice and limber so I can ACTUALLY walk comfortably tomorrow.
Because I don't work until later in the day tomorrow I am planning to get my yoga on in the morning for at least half an hour or so. I really love starting out my day that way when I can as I find that I feel much happier and more relaxed when I start with stretching and being able to focus my mind on positive things.
It just remains to be seen how flexible I am going to be in the morning after a night of not moving and stiffening up. Here's hoping I'll be able to move even a little.

New Shoes
There's something to be said for new footwear. I had recently bought a pair of sneakers from Payless and had hoped against hope that they would pass muster. I hadn't really taken into consideration just how MUCH I have been walking. Between actual work walking itself, walking the dogs and walking to and from my work I put upwards of 8-10 miles on my feet a day. While the runners I bought looked cute and the memory foam felt comfortable for all of about a day, they quickly pooped out and my feet started killing me.
Finally, I bit the biscuit and decided to spring for a more expensive pair of shoes. A quick trip to Sport Chek and I ended up getting a nice pair of Sauconys for a price that didn't involve me selling a kidney to make work with my limited budget. While my feet still have to get used to them I can already tell that they are quite a bit more comfortable than my last pair (which my eldest has now inherited thanks to feet that are the same size as mine).
Tonight, we took the dogs for about a 5km walk and even jogged a bit. Its always a struggle to run with our big dog since he tends to be large, immovable when he wants to stay in one spot, and VERY prone to pulling and veering off after things he wants to chase. I didn't do as badly as I thought I would when it came to running with him but I'm still getting back into the swing of jogging and so is the dog, for that matter.
I am hoping to get a second pair of good shoes that I can switch out with and also have as a dedicated gym pair for when the weather gets bad. I know that walking alone isn't going to get me where I need to be with my weight and my desired size and so the time will come when I have to brave the gym again. I just hope that time is a ways off .

Who I Am
Hey! Nice to see you! So I'm a middle aged potato. I'm not in the worst shape possible, mind you, but I am definitely NOT in good shape. I've tried a few times to get fit but it hasn't really stuck. This time, I'm hoping it does.
This blog isn't being written by someone who is heavily into exercise or who has a nutrition degree. It IS being written by someone who is tired of carrying around extra pounds, who is beginning to enjoy being active and who wants to eat better. If you're in the same boat and you think that checking in from time to time will help you out or encourage you in any way, I'd love if you popped in here from time to time to see what I am up to.
Life gets busy. I have kids. I have a full-time job and a part-time one as well so sometimes I feel like everything gets away from me. And while it was getting away from me, it was leaving some extra pounds behind in its place. It happened gradually, mind you, but gradually or not, I ended up about 25 lbs heavier than I wanted to be.
And then one day, I woke up and I was 40 and tired of being out of shape (well, potato is a shape, I guess). I want to be healthier and if I end up losing weight in the process I am not going to complain. I guess that since stats are a good basis for comparison, here are mine:

- Height: 5'11"
- BMI: 25.4

- Waist: 35"
